This section is for the Emergent form of the TIME model, the newest of its four forms. In the Emergent form, people organise by sharing what they hold in common and caring for the land together, linked to similar places around the world. The BioConomy wiki’s page on The TIME Framework describes it as “coordination through pooled commitments toward outcomes no single actor can produce alone.”

Each page in this section will cover one arrangement in the valley that the Forum reads as an early sign of the form. It may be a commons that people hold and look after together, a pooled commitment toward something none of them could do alone, or a network that links the valley to similar places. The page tells what the arrangement has done, and marks the Forum’s reading of it as interpretation. An idea the Forum has not yet agreed to stays among the Ideas for the Valley.

No pages have been written for this section yet. Until they are, the first signs of the Emergent form in the valley are listed in the table Early signals of Emergent on The Valley Through TIME. The Laws That Shaped the Valley marks the laws that opened room for it.

Emergent in the TIME model

TIME reads the valley’s history through four forms of organisation: Tribes, Institutions, Markets, and Emergent. Each new form is added to the ones before it, and none comes to a close.

In the Forum’s reading, Emergent is not yet the most dominant form anywhere in the valley. Its earliest signals date from 2011. They are weak signals, and most of them are recent. This reading carries no fact-status tag, and residents may read the history differently.

What is still open

  • Whether older shared arrangements belong in this section, such as Greyton’s Leiwater and the commonage that later became the nature reserve (see History of Greyton).
  • Whether the Forum adopts the TIME reading of the valley’s history.
