For Conservation Alpha to review

Conservation Alpha has not yet seen this page. It describes the organisation only through what it and its partners have said in public. The Forum has not approached Conservation Alpha about anything. Until Conservation Alpha has approved the text, it may change. Questions for Conservation Alpha:

  1. Is this description of Conservation Alpha and its work correct? What would you like to change?
  2. Where is Conservation Alpha based, and which website should readers use?
  3. Which catchments does your checking for the Cape Water bond cover? Do any of them lie in the Riviersonderend mountains?
  4. Should readers reach you through the moderators, or through a public contact?

Conservation Alpha is a specialist firm that works on how conservation is valued, managed, and financed [MS]. In the Cape Water Performance-Based Bond, listed in April 2026, it is the independent design and technical agent and oversees the checking of results [MS]. Part of what the bond’s investors earn depends on those checked results [IC]. The clearing the bond pays for is in the catchments of the Western Cape Water Supply System, and the valley lies downstream of that system’s largest dam [IC].

What the letters in square brackets mean

Facts on this page are followed by a tag that shows where they come from.

  • [IC] Independently Corroborated. Confirmed by an official record, such as a stock exchange notice or a government publication, or by at least two sources that do not depend on each other.
  • [MS] Mission-Sourced. Comes from the organisation’s own releases or website, or from the releases of its partners in the same programme. It has not been checked against sources that do not depend on them.
  • [TBV] To Be Verified. Seems likely, but nobody has confirmed it in writing yet.

What it does

Conservation Alpha says it combines business management practice with conservation science [MS]. It supports its clients in four areas: strategic frameworks, impact measurement and verification, programme and governance design, and large-scale conservation financing [MS].

How its work reaches the valley

The bond. FirstRand Bank issued the R2.5 billion bond, and it was listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange on 17 April 2026 [IC]. Part of investors’ returns is linked to independently verified restoration [IC]. Conservation Alpha provides that verification oversight, so that the environmental results are measured [MS]. Its Director of Science has said that because returns depend on performance, independent systems are needed to verify the results [MS].

The catchments. The Nature Conservancy South Africa does the clearing through the Greater Cape Town Water Fund, in remote priority catchments of the Western Cape Water Supply System [MS]. The public releases about the bond do not name those catchments.

The valley. Theewaterskloof Dam, on the Riviersonderend near Villiersdorp, is the largest dam in the Western Cape Water Supply System [IC]. The valley lies downstream of it, where the Gobos and Baviaans rivers join the Riviersonderend [IC]. Wild Restoration, which clears invasive plants in the Riviersonderend mountains above Greyton, has told the Forum that the Greater Cape Town Water Fund supports clearing in those mountains through a partnership with CapeNature [TBV]. Which slopes that covers, and whether they drain into the dam or into the valley’s own rivers, is not yet known. Whether any clearing in those mountains is part of what Conservation Alpha checks is also not known.

Where it touches this site

  • Restoring the River, an idea not yet agreed, names Conservation Alpha, as the bond’s verifier, among organisations that might work with the valley. It has not been asked.
  • Ridge to River to Table, an idea not yet agreed, describes the bond and the parties to it.

What is still open

  • Where Conservation Alpha is based, and its website.
  • Which catchments its checking covers, and whether any lie in the Riviersonderend mountains.
  • How results are measured. The public releases do not say which measures, or what level of result, change what investors earn.
