This idea is not yet agreed. At its first meeting, the Forum agreed that the proposal goes to the Transformasie Komitee in writing first [MS]. This page will be published once the Komitee has received it, and the Komitee’s response will be added here. The proposal will also be tabled at the Forum’s November 2026 meeting.
What the letters in square brackets mean
Facts on this page are followed by a tag that shows where they come from.
- [IC] Independently Corroborated. Confirmed by at least two sources that do not depend on each other, or by an official record.
- [MS] Mission-Sourced. Comes from the people putting this idea forward, or from the organisation the sentence names, in their own documents or statements. It has not been checked against other sources.
- [TBV] To Be Verified. Seems likely, but nobody has confirmed it yet.
Statements without a tag are proposals. They describe what the idea could become.
What it is
The Valley of Grace Heritage Trail and Nature Realm Activation is a twelve-month project [MS]. It would join Greyton and the mission settlements (Genadendal, Bereaville, Voorstekraal, and Boschmanskloof) into one visitor experience for the first time [MS]. It asks the Western Cape Government’s Tourism Growth Fund for part of the money [MS].
The project’s vision: by the 300th anniversary in 2038, the valley has a six-month waiting list of visitors who want to see its transformation [MS].
What it would deliver
- A heritage and nature trail. Fifteen interpretation panels, ten direction signs, and thirty QR plaques linking heritage, nature, and food sites across Greyton and the mission settlements [MS]. Digital information points in Greyton and Genadendal [MS]. Repairs to the trails between Greyton, Voorstekraal, and Bereaville [MS].
- Two conservation stories. A Cape leopard corridor in the mountains above the valley, and citizen science on fynbos and rainfall in the catchment [MS].
- A digital layer. The Valley of Grace Nature Realm, an online platform covering about 10,000 hectares, where residents and visitors record plants, animals, and heritage [MS].
- Heritage tours in Genadendal. Two heritage homes upgraded to receive visitors, four donkey carts refurbished to carry visitors between stops, and an office renovated [MS].
- Marketing. A website, trail maps, welcome packs for guesthouses, photographs, and a short video [MS].
Who would benefit
- Eight heritage guides from the mission settlements, trained on an accredited course, earning from tour fees [MS].
- Six heritage home hosts, trained in hospitality and heritage storytelling [MS].
- Donkey cart drivers, earning a fee per ride [MS].
- One heritage content facilitator for six months, recording residents’ stories [MS].
- About 20 older residents who share their knowledge of the valley’s heritage, with their contributions credited by name [MS].
- About 30 to 40 tourism businesses across the ward, who would be shown how to use the trail to bring in guests [MS].
- Learners at the valley’s schools, who would take part through citizen science and heritage projects [MS].
The project would give residents of the mission settlements a way to earn from heritage tourism using what is already there: homes, knowledge, and the landscape [MS].
The money
The project would cost about R1.8 million in total, including about R405,000 in donated time, services, and venues [MS].
| Part of the project | From the Tourism Growth Fund | From co-funders | Total (cash) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Trail and signage | R339,500 | R90,000 | R429,500 |
| Product and marketing | R195,850 | R191,000 | R386,850 |
| Business support and training | R126,000 | none | R126,000 |
| Genadendal heritage tours | R30,000 | R447,000 | R477,000 |
| Total | R691,350 | R728,000 | R1,419,350 |
The Rotary Club of Greyton has budgeted R70,000 [MS]. The rest of the co-funding has been requested from a corporate partner, on condition that the grant is approved [MS]. That partner will be named here once it confirms.
Where it stands
The application was being prepared for submission by the end of September 2026 [TBV]. Whether and when it is approved is not yet known [TBV].
What is still open
- The Transformasie Komitee’s view. The project works with heritage in the mission settlements, so the Komitee’s input comes first.
- Approval by Heritage Western Cape for panels inside the Genadendal heritage precinct, and by the municipality for signs on municipal land [MS].
- Confirmation from the co-funders.
