What the letters in square brackets mean

Facts on this page are followed by a tag that shows where they come from.

  • [IC] Independently Corroborated. Confirmed by an official record, such as a government notice or a court or council record, or by at least two sources that do not depend on each other.
  • [MS] Mission-Sourced. Comes from the organisation’s own website or statements, from the statements of a group it works with, or from the Forum’s own records. It has not been checked against sources that do not depend on them.
  • [TBV] To Be Verified. Seems likely, but nobody has confirmed it from a reliable source yet.

What it does

A catchment management agency carries out parts of the National Water Act for one water management area [IC]. The national notice establishing this agency extended the area of the Breede-Gouritz agency [IC].

How its work reaches the valley

  • Water use and licences. The National Water Act page names the agency as the body for water use registration and licences in the Breede catchment [IC].
  • Earlier work. Its predecessor, the Breede-Gouritz Catchment Management Agency, was a partner in the Breede Catchment Water Stewardship Programme led by WWF South Africa [MS].

Where it touches this site

  • National Water Act, where the agency is one of the two bodies that administer the Act in the valley.
  • From Water Access to Water Agency, an idea not yet agreed, which would ask the agency whether water added below the dam could be counted. The agency has not been asked.
  • Ridge to River to Table, an idea not yet agreed, which names the agency among organisations whose views are needed.

What is still open

  • Where the agency’s office is, and its website.
  • How a resident registers water use with it.
