For WWF South Africa to review
WWF South Africa has not yet seen this page. It describes the organisation only through what it has said or done, and through what others named here have said about it. The Forum has not approached WWF South Africa about anything. Until WWF South Africa has approved the text, it may change. Questions for WWF South Africa:
- Is this description of WWF South Africa’s work on the Riviersonderend correct? What would you like to change?
- Does WWF South Africa still work in the Riviersonderend or Breede catchments near the valley?
- Should readers reach you through the moderators, or through a public contact?
WWF South Africa is the South African office of the global conservation organisation. In 2013 it started a project to clear invasive plants along the Riviersonderend, with funding from government and private partners, and at the end of 2017 it handed the project to the Zonderend Water Users Association, which named it Restoring the Riviersonderend [MS].
What the letters in square brackets mean
Facts on this page are followed by a tag that shows where they come from.
- [IC] Independently Corroborated. Confirmed by an official record, such as a government notice or a court or council record, or by at least two sources that do not depend on each other.
- [MS] Mission-Sourced. Comes from the organisation’s own website or statements, from the statements of a group it works with, or from the Forum’s own records. It has not been checked against sources that do not depend on them.
- [TBV] To Be Verified. Seems likely, but nobody has confirmed it from a reliable source yet.

What it does
WWF South Africa leads the Breede Catchment Water Stewardship Programme, whose first phase ran in 2013 and 2014 [MS]. The programme works with farmers and towns on water risks, clears invasive plants, and has partners including Woolworths and the catchment agency [MS]. It sat on the steering committee of the Greater Cape Town Water Fund in 2020 [MS].
How its work reaches the valley
- The Riviersonderend. WWF South Africa started the clearing project that the Zonderend Water Users Association now runs [MS].
- The Breede catchment. The stewardship programme led by WWF and Woolworths reports releasing 200 million litres of water a year back into the catchment [MS].
Where it touches this site
- Zonderend Water Users Association, which took over WWF’s clearing project.
- From Water Access to Water Agency, an idea not yet agreed, which cites the Breede programme and asks whether WWF would be interested. WWF has not been asked.
What is still open
- Whether WWF South Africa still works near the valley.
