The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) is responsible for early childhood development and for primary and secondary schooling in the province [MS]. The valley’s public schools, Emil Weder Secondary, Greyton Primary, L.R. Schmidt Primary, and Berea Primary, are no-fee schools in its system [IC]. Emil Weder Secondary is in the Overberg education district [IC].

What the letters in square brackets mean

Facts on this page are followed by a tag that shows where they come from.

  • [IC] Independently Corroborated. Confirmed by an official record, such as a government notice or a court or council record, or by at least two sources that do not depend on each other.
  • [MS] Mission-Sourced. Comes from the organisation’s own website or statements, from the statements of a group it works with, or from the Forum’s own records. It has not been checked against sources that do not depend on them.
  • [TBV] To Be Verified. Seems likely, but nobody has confirmed it from a reliable source yet.

What it does

The department manages schools through eight education districts [MS]. It names its aims as better language and maths results, better matric results, and wider access to quality education in poor communities [MS].

How its work reaches the valley

  • The schools. Emil Weder Secondary had 556 learners in 2026, L.R. Schmidt Primary 391, Berea Primary 274, and Greyton Primary 257 [IC]. All four are in quintiles 1 to 3, so learners pay no school fees [IC].
  • A school of skills. The Valley of Grace Learning Campus idea draws on a school in Bonnievale whose buildings the department helped pay for [TBV]. Whether the department would open a school of skills in the valley is an open question there.
