Genadendal was founded in 1738 by Georg Schmidt, a Moravian missionary, who taught the Khoi to read and write. It was first called Baviaanskloof. The name Genadendal means “valley of grace”. The mission buildings around Church Square (die Werf) form the Genadendal Mission Complex, a Provincial Heritage Site, and more than a dozen buildings in the village date from the 1800s. The official Cape Town residence of South Africa’s president is named after the village.

In 2038 Genadendal will mark 300 years since the mission was founded.
